Hi All
Video Testimonial for Mobile Marketing Program by Dan Hollings by
Patty Rutkowski
The EventWhat better way to showcase their mobile marketing services than by allowing the people at this event to vote for their favorite wings through SMS/Text messaging? The Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce has hosted a Wing competition event as part of their monthly Business after Hours series for the last 10 years. The event brings Lakeland (Chamber Member) restaurants together to showcase their wings and promote their restaurants in front of 600+ other chamber members.
In the past, the event only offered a prize to the restaurant that was chosen by a panel of 3 to 4 judges.
The Problem
The chamber officials were aware that the restaurants wanted a more versatile method for judging the wings that would acknowledge a people’s choice winner as well as a judges’ vote.
The problem in the past was the viability of this option, considering the time it would take to tally 600 votes, the cost involved in creating a means with which to vote and the people it would require to make all of this happen.
The Opportunity
This provided Marketing System Blueprints with an opportunity to present mobile marketing to the local area businesses.
The idea was received with much enthusiasm. The program was given the green light and a versatile text platform would be needed to make this a success. The first step was to determine if the Chamber was willing to entertain the idea of a text to vote option for this competition.Marketing System Blueprints was able to show how this simple contest could provide member participation and excitement about the event.
The Solution
(Please note: this was started just before StomperMobile classes.)
After extensive research that provided additional education into the world of keywords, short codes, auto responses and opt-ins, a company emerged that would be the perfect fit for this project. BoomText offered excellent customer service every step of the way. Offering a free trial on their website with easily accessible video instructions that would guide visitors through the process of building an SMS campaign was just the beginning. Less than 24 hours after beginning the trial, a follow-up phone call from a BoomText representative allowed Marketing System Blueprints to explain their project and determine the best way to proceed with their plan.
However, BoomText was able to provide assistance with this as well. Marketing System Blueprints wanted to build a list from the votes that would ensure the members of the lists were willing to receive future messages related to restaurants in the local area. BoomText was not only able to assist in creating this message, but also helped apply it to each individual keyword so that a specific autoresponse was set up for each restaurant. The crafting of a message that fits the SMS requirements of 160 characters is not an easy task.
The Objective
The following are the main objects Marketing System Blueprints wanted to accomplish with a text to vote system:

· Create excitement for current members and recruitment of new members
· Show the business community that the Lakeland Chamber was progressive
· Branding for Marketing System Blueprints

The restaurants we very excited about text messaging program resulting in one immediate appointment and two warm follow ups.
MSB continues to receive “FOOD10” opt-ins 5 days after the event.
MSB received 40 business cards for follow up to interest in mobile marketing.
MSB educated businesses on QR codes and other aspects of mobile marketing.
The Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce received praise for an innovative mobile marketing event and received new enrollments.
Observations
Perhaps the most exciting element of this project is the visibility that it allowed. Restaurants are capable of grasping this marketing strategy very quickly because they recognize the value of bringing foot traffic to their venue. This is a very simple program to set up and manage. However, mobile marketing is still a new and novel marketing tool. It is not always easy to take the ideas that Hollywood is using and apply them to the everyday world of Main Street, USA.

I setup an appoint to visit with a bakery in NY next week - the owner is VERY excited. We discussed the sending alerts to existing clients and offering a discount when they purchase specially advertised goods.
You see from time to time they over-bake goods resulting in high rates of spoilage which of course directly and negatively affecting the bottom-line. Well no more! If they over-bake, a message goes out by TXT with a coupon code redeemable at their mobile website. The mobile website will also feature other specials and a hot link to their ecommerce equipped pc website. How cool is that!! But wait, it gets better.
The system will also call customers before special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries and ask if they'd like to order the same or similar products as before. For that piece we'll use http://www.ColdCallingForDummies.com as part of a turnkey solution. Mobile Marketing is indeed the future of Marketing!
